Let me share my observations from day one of judging the digital & mobile entries at Spikes Asia 2013.
On Saturday at 9am the juries of 6 categories (Digital / Mobile / PR / Media / Branded Content / Craft ) gathered in one room for the opening note from Terry Savage.
He spent about 10 minutes going through the basic disciplines and rules of the whole judging process. There was a lot of laughter as he firmly reminded all jurors to be fair in judging and not to discriminate against each others holding companies. For those who do not know, the discrimination between judges towards each others network was a big political issue in Cannes two years ago.
The shortlist is now out for both categories – 56 for Digital and 29 for Mobile. Honestly I had little difficulty sorting out the shortlist from the 152 Digital and 63 Mobile entries that made it to the finalist pool. Apart from the obvious few entries (Dumb Ways to Die, Txtbks etc.) that most of you have already seen at Cannes this year, there aren’t many great entries. I was bored by the lack of fresh work. Probably because I’ve already seen this work too many times this year – at Cannes, at the judging of Adstars in Korea, the China
4As Golden Seal Awards and the CAA Greatwall Awards. Same entries. All too familiar. Anyhow, I still look forward to tomorrow when we select the metals.
